Adrian Frutiger
Frutiger is widely accepted to be one of the most influential typeface artists of our time. He began his career as a typesetter in Interlaken near the Swiss village of Unterssen where he was born in 1928. Through his lifetime, Frutiger witnessed the evolution of type from he setting of metal letters into the digital design. As text evolved form being cast in metal slugs to beams of light, Frutiger said, “the talk of adapting the typefaces of the old master from relief type tot he flat film was my best school” (linotype.com 2017). Frutiger notably created fonts for the Paris Metro Authority and the Paris Airport Authority. His font design is iconically related to the Charles de Gaulle Airport. Referred to as “Design of the invisible,” Adrian Frutiger said this about his theory of design, “If you remember the shape of your spoon at lunch it as to be the wrong shape. The spoon and letter are tools; one to take food from the bowl, the other to take information off the page…When it is a good design, the reader has to feel comfortable because the letter is both banal and beautiful” (parisianfield.com 2017).
